Rob Bellini of CB Trimming fields questions about home remodeling and how to add interest and definition while maintaining style and comfort. Here, Rob answers the questions he’s asked the most.
Question: I really want to refresh my house without getting too complicated. Can I do this by updating my interior trim and wall hangings? If so, what’s in style right now?
Answer: Interior moldings add polish and definition to your home, and can make a huge impact when you update them. Framing in your walls creates width, depth, and height, and adds elegance and architectural interest. Trim styles come and go, from simple and understated to loud and brazen.
Today, we are seeing new transitional styles that have smoother lines, and cleaner profiles. We are using cove crown moldings in a lot of our remodel jobs, because of the simple, concaved profiles and how it smooths sharp transitions between the wall and ceiling without being too fancy or overpowering.
We’re also pairing cove moldings with smooth Oggee casings. Casing are the most visible trim in a room and make a room feel anemic or overstuffed when not addressed properly. Oggee casings have simple, understated grace that compliments crown and base moldings and helps the window draw in the outdoors.
Larger, flat bases are currently in style and I’m glad. I feel that there’s an aesthetic balance that may not be achieved with smaller bases in many of the homes I do.
These lower profiles can frame a room in a very dramatic way, without the busyness that complicated molding and trim can add. With the right trim, even a plain room can quickly be made into a dynamic space with a strong crown and base.
